The artist who learned to cook (and what it means for your prayers)

PRAYER?

START HERE...

My wife is an artist—hands down the most creative person I know.

She can paint, write, design, and craft with the best of them. She's a free spirit who thrives in the fluidity of being an artist.

But when it comes to cooking, creativity has been her downfall.Because cooking is a science with recipes of precise measurements.

But lately, Faith has been excited to learn that once you understand the fundamentals of cooking, you then have some room to be creative within those parameters.

And guess what? She's become a fantastic cook, too!

This reminds me of how Jesus has taught us to pray with the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13).

Not as restrictive rules for regurgitating rote scripts. But loving guidelines to help us freely commune with the heavenly Father who adores us.

And when Jesus taught the Lord's Prayer, He wasn't giving us magic words to recite. He was giving us a template—a recipe, if you will—three movements that free us to have authentic conversations with God.

1. Start with God. Remember who you're talking to and who you are as His beloved child.

2. Share your heart. Bring your real needs—physical, emotional, relational. God cares about every part of your actual life.

3. End with trust. Your circumstances might be uncertain, but your Father is 100% secure.

This isn't about perfect prayers or religious performance. It's about growing in authentic relationship with your heavenly Father.

This week, I'm praying that you'll experience the freedom and peace that comes from prayer rooted in Jesus's loving teaching.

CREEPY LULLABIES & STOLEN PEACE When Judah was a brand-new baby, we would strap a little monitor to his foot every night. It was supposed to give us peace of mind by alerting us if he ever stopped breathing. I think it actually took 10 years off my life. Every night around 2am, a creepy lullaby would start blaring, signaling that our baby had stopped breathing. Deliriously, Faith and I would launch out of bed, wrestle past each other down the hallway, and burst into Judah’s room, only to find...

TURKEY EGGROLLS? Our friends have a Black Friday tradition that sounds a bit off the wall, but is apparently amazing. The day after Thanksgiving, they take all their leftovers—turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, everything—and wrap it all up in egg roll wrappers, then fry them golden. They swear these "Thanksgiving egg rolls" are better than the actual meal. (BTW...we are definitely going to test it out today!) It got me thinking about how easy it is to believe our best days are behind us....

HELP MY UNBELIEF I don't know about you, but the past couple of weeks have been a little overwhelming. Ministry stuff, personal stuff, family stuff—it's all felt like trying to fold laundry in front of a swamp cooler. I keep finding myself sitting in my car or lying in my bed, just talking to God about it all. Not with perfect faith or eloquent prayers, just honest conversations like, "I don't know what I'm doing here, God. Help me figure this out." Sometimes that's all we've got. It reminds...
